Minolta/Konica Minolta/Sony Alpha lens data

Please note that this page only provides technical information. This is not an online shop. Don't send requests for price quotes etc. I can not sell you anything that's listed here.

Display filter

This is supposed to be a tech data sheet of all Minolta/KonicaMinolta/Sony Alpha lenses. My goal is to list all lenses, including older versions, and to list more tech data than the official brochures, eg. whether and when the filter turns.

Lenses are highlighted as follows:

Current lens
Discontinued lens
Announced lens

Brands are highlighted as follows:

Minolta, Konica Minolta
Sony
Carl Zeiss

Whenever there's a “?” or empty space in the table, I do not know the data. If you have that specific lens, or when you have a model not listed yet, and you can provide the data, please contact me and I'll update the table as soon as possible.

Data for announced products should be considered preliminary. Exact data often isn't known until after the actual release. You should not rely on data for announced products to be correct.

Terminology

APO
Apochromatic correction using AD elements. Mostly used on tele primes and zooms.

HS-APO
APO with higher-speed electronics and gearing. Some of the long tele primes were released after the other APO tele primes were updated to HS-APO, so they don't have a non-HS predecessor. Also, the latest SSM lenses are again only called “APO”.

(D)
Distance encoder, used for ADI flash, matrix metering in MF mode and DOF display. All D lenses currently also feature a wider focus ring. With some the focus ring does not rotate in AF mode (see table).
With Sony lenses the (D) specifier is no longer part of the official name, but not all lenses have the D function. Check the “D function” column to see which lenses have it and which don't.

DT
“Digital Technology”, image circle adapted to APS-C digital SLRs. Can not be used with full-frame film cameras. Can be used on full-frame digital cameras in crop mode.

G
Minolta's high quality lenses, featuring a large maximum aperture, AD elements, high build quality, circular aperture, aspheric elements, floating focusing.

SSM
In-lens ultra-sonic motor. Compatible only with the 7 and later bodies, plus the 9 after a firmware upgrade. No auto-focus with series I and II converters.

SAM
In-lens micro motor. Compatible only with the 7 and later bodies, plus the 9 after a firmware upgrade. No auto-focus with series I and II converters.

xi
Motorized zoom controlled by the body or by the photographer (power-assisted manual zoom). Auto-zoom only works on xi bodies with assorted chip cards. Manual zoom must be used on bodies after the xi series. Does not work on pre-xi bodies.

ZA
Zeiss-designed lenses for Sony Alpha (= Minolta AF) mount.

T*
Carl Zeiss high performance coating

Thank you so much for this list. It helps so much to know which of the lenses work with the Alpha. We are considering purchasing the Alpha to complement our current lineup of Cameras. We use exclusively Nikon for shoots, but the focus in low light for the D300 is not good when coupled with the 70-200 2.8 lens. Your page helped us with a solution.

Thanks again,

Bill

GREAT CHART!!! I have seen and printed off a few charts like this over the years, notably one from Minolta, but this is the best I've seen.

On another subject, I have been hearing lately about design for full frame DSLR, not just in terms of covering the frame with light, but the angle of light impingement at the corners. The story goes that the design of digital sensors makes them lossy when light comes from an angle far from 90 degrees. If this is true, then a column asserting designed for digital full frame may be in order in the near future. Also, the DT catagory being unsuitable for most compatable cameras for this mount might merrit a column just for that feature.

Thanks again for this wonderful chart.

Current lenses work just fine on DSLRs, microlenses on the sensors take care of the problem. If that changes in the future I will update the table.

The restrictions of DT lenses are already mentioned in the terminology section at the end of the page.

This is a great archive of sony/minolta lenses, but how about including third party lenses? Such as from tamron, sigma and tokina? Between them, they have quite a few a-mount lenses available.

Jennifer
Michael Hohner answers:
This is currently not planned. Please refer to Dyxum for third-party lens information.

Amaaaazing website and information. Thanks.. :-)

But, i'm sad as well, realised that no macro lens (100mm or less) with Internal Focus feature for my Sony camera, wanna put it in housing for underwater photography. Anybody know whether Sony/Sigma/Tamron will launch it?
Michael Hohner answers:
I guess what you want is a macro lens that doesn't extend. Well, the 200/4 Macro doesn't extend, but you probably won't use it in an underwater housing. As for shorter macros, you'll probably have a hard time finding one that does not extend. I have no information about the future plans of camera makers.

Dankeschön, Darling Dankeschön.!!!

Thanks a lot for this list, it helps me realy after buying my "First Sony" to get some good Lenses. It is my first SLR since i get 1986 the 8 Year old Konica from my Father.
First i was surprised and happy that all Min AF Lens ever build, will work on my Alpha, that not all of the Lenses are worth buying was clear, but not wich ones are good.
You helped me to sort them out and find the right ones for me.

Hallo,
Klasse Seite.

great work, well done!!!
As said Jennifer I think could be a good idea to add also third-party lens information (sigma, tamron, tokina...) ;)

A comment and a question. First, I just received a 24-105mm Minolta AF lens and find that the focus ring does not rotate when the lens is autofocusing. The chart says that it does. The question, Since the Minolta and Sony lenses are so similar, do the lens hoods interchange? My Minolta came without the hood and I want to buy one for it. Will the Sony hood fit?

You site is a phenomenal source of information, Thank you for our efforts.
Michael Hohner answers:
The table says it does not rotate. You probably have looked at the wrong column.

While I have not made a side-by-side comparison of the hoods, I'm quite confident the hoods are interchangeable. After all, Sony has not changed anything else.

Unbelievable Minolta/konica/Sony/Zeiss lens data sheet! I have seen several offerings with varying depths. This sheet is the most concise chart I have seen to date. Simply put this chart has all the data any new Sony Alpha owner (such as myself) needs to build up an amazing arsenal of lenses. Thank You Mr Hohner;~)

Might be a dumb question, but am I correct in assuming that all these lenses will in fact fit on any current Sony DSLRs?
Michael Hohner answers:
Basically, yes. Also see the F.A.Q. list.

I tried very hard to get this information. I even called Sony, but they had no information about the 100-300mm xi zoom. This is what I was looking for. Thanks.

Hi. Great website - many thanks. I have an RD3000 with a collection of lenses. These are interchangeable with the Vectis APS cameras. Are these lenses usable with the Sony DSLRs (or any current DSLRs)? Thanks.
Michael Hohner answers:
The Vectis system was discontinued long ago. The RD3000 was the first and last DSLR of the Vectis system. I don't know any adapter to any other system.

I have a A70 sony and have been seeking either the 1000mm or the 1600 mm lens Minolta made. Anyone know where I can find one?
Michael Hohner answers:
There is no A mount 1000mm or 1600mm lens by Minolta. I think there is a >500 mm mirror lens for the SR mount by Minolta, but these are not the topic of this page.

Since I purchased my Sony A350 in May of this year, I've been looking for some good Minolta lenses, since I found that they would fit my new DSLR. I've found a few, and now thanks to all your hard work, I have the resource for finding more! Thank you so much for doing all your research & publishing it on the Internet for allowing others to benefit.
One question: do you plan on including any of the old Minolta MD lenses in the future?
Thanks again!!
Michael Hohner answers:
These pages are limited to the AF mount systems. I have no plans to add MD lenses here.
